Hosea and the Epistles of John: Hesed, God’s Covenant Love I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord. ~Hosea 2.19-20 God loves us deeply. Sacrificially. We are the Bride on Whom He has set His deepest affections. His love for us is so extravagant He sent His Beloved Son to lay down His life to redeem us. Therefore, He commands us to love Him sacrificially: with all our heart, soul, and mind. He also calls us to love one another with the same love we have received from Him. We cannot wholeheartedly obey either of His commands apart from an accurate, biblical picture of God’s hesed, His covenant love. Hesed, often translated as ‘lovingkindness’, is threaded throughout Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. This means it is an important doctrine in the Bible. We need to carefully study what the Bible teaches about it and allow it to permeate our daily lives. That is the aim of our next study. The book of Hosea and the Epistles of John work together beautifully to declare God’s covenant love for His people. We will look at these two books of the Bible concurrently, interlacing the Old and New Testament texts. Beginning September 15th and 16th, join Mikie Bellis, Mary Hambly, and the women of CPC as we do a deep dive into the doctrine of Hesed, God’s covenant love, through the study of Hosea and John’s Epistles! Weekly lectures are presented live on Wednesday mornings. A podcast of the lecture is posted every Tuesday, and the lecture videos are posted on the CPC website on Wednesday afternoons. Weekly Bible study lessons are provided free of charge via email. Small group discussion of the lesson and lecture is offered on Wednesdays, beginning September 16th from 9:30-11:00 a.m. (lunch will be served at 11:00 a.m.). There are also online small groups that meet on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 p.m. We also offer an enhanced children’s Bible study focusing on the truths of the women’s weekly lessons. Childcare will be provided through lunch, until 12:00. Women are encouraged to stay for lunch to develop deeper relationships with one another while your children eat lunch with their friends. Childcare is provided for children in 5th grade and under. If you have a homeschool student older than 5th grade, please contact Kristin Page at kristin@cpchouston.org.
