 , God has mercy on whomever he wills\, and he hardens the heart of whomeve
 r he wills. You will say to me then\, "Why does he still find fault? For w
 ho can resist his will?" But who are you\, a man\, to answer back to God? 
 Will what is molded say to its molder\, "Why have you made me thus?" Has t
 he potter no right over the clay\, to make out of the same lump one vessel
  for beauty and another for menial use? What if God\, desiring to show his
  wrath and to make known his power\, has endured with much patience the ve
 ssels of wrath made for destruction\, in order to make known the riches of
  his glory for the vessels of mercy\, which he has prepared beforehand for
  glory\, even us whom he has called\, not from the Jews only but also from
  the Gentiles? As indeed he says in Hosea\, "Those who were not my people 
 I will call 'my people\,' and her who was not beloved I will call 'my belo
 ved.'" "And in the very place where it was said to them\, 'You are not my 
 people\,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'" And Isaiah cries 
 out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the 
 sand of the sea\, only a remnant of them will be saved\; for the Lord will
  execute his sentence upon the earth with rigor and dispatch." And as Isai
 ah predicted\, "if the Lord of hosts had not left us children\, we would h
 ave fared like Sodom and been made like Gomorrah." What shall we say\, the
 n? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it\, that 
 is\, righteousness through faith\; but that Israel who pursued the righteo
 usness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law. Why? 
 Because they did not pursue it through faith\, but as if it were based on 
 works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone\, as it is written\, "B
 ehold\, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make men stumble\, a rock th
 at will make them fall\; and he who believes in him will not be put to sha
 me."\n\nGospel Reading: Luke 6:1-10\nAt that time\, Jesus was going throug
 h the grainfields on the sabbath\, and his disciples plucked and ate some 
 heads of grain\, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees sa
 id\, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the sabbath?" And Jesu
 s answered\, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry\, he and
  those who were with him: how he entered the house of God\, and took and a
 te the bread of the Presence\, which it is not lawful for any but the prie
 sts to eat\, and also gave it to those with him?" And he said to them\, "T
 he Son of man is lord of the sabbath." On another sabbath\, when he entere
 d the synagogue and taught\, a man was there whose right hand was withered
 . And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him\, to see whether he would 
 heal on the sabbath\, so that they might find an accusation against him. B
 ut he knew their thoughts\, and he said to the man who had the withered ha
 nd\, "Come and stand here." And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to
  them\, "I ask you\, is it lawful on the sabbath to do good or to do harm\
 , to save life or to destroy it?" And he looked around on them all\, and s
 aid to him\, "Stretch out your hand." And he did so\, and his hand was res
